Frequently asked questions

Is VetExpenses written by veterinarians?

Not yet. Pages are researched and fact-checked against cited veterinary sources by our editorial team, and each health page is labeled "Veterinary review pending" until a licensed veterinarian reviews it.

Where do your facts come from?

From named sources cited on every page, such as the Merck Veterinary Manual, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, the AVMA, AAHA, university veterinary colleges and peer-reviewed studies.

Are your vet prices what I'll pay?

They're typical US ranges from cited sources, with the year. Your clinic may charge more or less depending on location, clinic type and your pet's needs. Ask for a written estimate.

Can I use your calculators for medication doses?

No. We deliberately don't offer medication dose calculators. Only your veterinarian should set a dose for your pet.

Do you store my pet's information?

Your optional pet profile stays in your own browser and is never sent to us. You can delete it any time with "Forget my pet".

Do you recommend pet insurance companies?

No. We explain how pet insurance works and help you run your own numbers, but we don't rank or recommend insurers.

My pet ate something toxic. What should I do?

Call your vet, an emergency vet, or a pet poison line right away — ASPCA Animal Poison Control (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661. Don't make your pet vomit unless a professional tells you to.
