How the math works
Your yearly cost with insurance = 12 × monthly premium + the vet bill − what the policy pays. The policy pays (bill − deductible) × reimbursement rate, up to the annual limit. Without insurance, you pay the whole bill.
The four numbers on every policy
- Premium: what you pay each month.
- Deductible: what you pay before coverage starts.
- Reimbursement rate: the share of an eligible bill paid back to you.
- Annual limit: the most the policy will pay in a year.
Also check what isn't covered: waiting periods, exclusions and pre-existing conditions. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners explains these terms; it notes deductibles may apply per incident or per year, and limits may be annual, lifetime, per procedure or per incident [1][2]. We don't rank or recommend insurers.
